Six Manual Lenses on a Nikon Z8: What It's Actually Like

No autofocus, one aperture ring per lens, and a focus ring you have to earn. Here's how each one handles and what the Z8 does to make it workable.

On a Nikon Z8, manual focus lenses work through focus peaking combined with viewfinder magnification — peaking to get close, magnified view to confirm on an eye. In-body stabilisation stays off with lenses that have no electronics until each one is entered under Setup Menu, Non-CPU Lens Data, with its focal length and maximum aperture. Assigning that menu to a custom button makes switching between lenses fast enough for a live session.

Why Manual at All

I own autofocus glass and I use it — an 85mm f/1.2 among others, and for some work it is simply the right tool. But when I get to choose, I shoot manual, and it is for character rather than principle. Autofocus is better than me at finding an eye. It is not better than me at deciding which eye, at what moment, with what part of the frame allowed to go soft. When I focus by hand I am making that decision every time instead of approving one the camera already made. The manual lenses also look different. Older designs and Zeiss primes render with a particular quality — how highlights fall off, how the background dissolves, how skin holds texture without turning clinical — that modern autofocus lenses tend to correct away. That look is the reason I keep reaching for them. The practical effect is that I shoot less and look more. A session with manual lenses produces fewer frames and a higher proportion I actually want. Whether that trade is worth it depends on the work — for anything fast-moving, autofocus wins and I use it. For sitting down with someone for an hour, manual is the better choice. What follows is how each lens handles, and what you need to set up on the Z8 to make any of it work.

Setting Up the Camera First

There are two things to do before a manual lens works properly on a Z8, and one of them is easy to miss for years. The first is focus peaking. Turn it on, pick a colour that does not appear in skin — I use red or blue, never yellow — and set the sensitivity somewhere in the middle. High sensitivity paints half the frame and tells you nothing. The second matters more, and almost nobody mentions it. Stabilisation does not work with lenses that have no electronics until you tell the camera what they are. Without that information, the camera has no idea what focal length is mounted, so it leaves stabilisation off. You fix it in the setup menu under non-CPU lens data: enter the focal length and maximum aperture for each lens, give it a name, and save it to a slot. Once saved, you will see a small hand icon with the focal length beside it in the viewfinder, and stabilisation is running. With six lenses this becomes tedious to change through menus, so assign non-CPU lens data to a custom button. Then switching lenses is: mount, press button, pick the slot, shoot. If you skip this, everything still works — you just have no stabilisation, which you will feel most at 135mm.

Peak First, Then Magnify

Focus peaking is worth understanding properly, because it is a guide rather than a measurement. It works by looking for contrast between neighbouring pixels and painting whatever it finds. That means it behaves differently depending on the lens, the aperture and the subject. On soft or low-contrast lenses it can under-report and show you less than is actually sharp. On a busy background it happily paints things that are not your subject. What the Z8 also gives you is a magnified view, and that is the tool I actually trust. Peaking gets me close, then I punch in and confirm on an eye. That two-step habit — peak roughly, magnify to be sure — is the whole technique, and once it is automatic it takes about a second. At wider apertures on the longer lenses, magnifying is not optional. At f/1.4 from three metres the sharp zone is thin enough that peaking alone will let you land on an eyebrow and feel confident about it.

The Wides: 35mm f/1.4 and f/2

I own both Zeiss 35s, which sounds redundant until you carry them. The f/1.4 is a serious piece of hardware. It is heavy, front-heavy on the Z8, and it changes how you hold the camera — left hand under the lens, not around the grip. Focus throw is long, which is exactly what you want when the sharp zone is a few centimetres deep. Wide open it renders with a softness at the edges that suits environmental portraits, someone in a room with the room still readable. Stopped down slightly it tightens up considerably. The f/2 is the one I bring when I am moving. It is about half the weight, it balances properly, and I forget it is on the camera. For walking a venue, following people around, working through a getting-ready sequence, this is the 35 that comes along. It is not as dramatic wide open. It is also not sitting at home because it was too heavy. That is a real pattern with manual glass: the lens you actually carry is often not the best one you own.

The Portrait Pair: Zeiss 85mm f/1.4 and Nikkor 85mm f/1.4D

Same focal length, same maximum aperture, completely different experience. The Zeiss Planar is the precise one, and it is the lens I shoot more than anything else. Long, smooth focus throw, heavy in a reassuring way, and the rendering is exact — high micro-contrast, controlled falloff, a look that stays consistent from frame to frame. It is my default for portraits, and most sessions start with it on the body. The Nikkor 85mm f/1.4D is the opposite personality. It is an autofocus lens I use manually, so the focus ring is short-throw and comparatively loose — small movements cover a lot of distance, and precise placement takes more care than with the Zeiss. Wide open it is softer and warmer, with a gentler transition into the background. Less accurate, more forgiving. On the right face in the right light it produces something the Zeiss will not. If I could only keep one, it would be the Zeiss. But the D lens is lighter, cheaper, and produces about eighty percent of the result, which is worth saying out loud.

The Long Ones: 105mm f/2.5 and 135mm f/2

The Nikkor 105mm f/2.5 is my other most-used lens, and the one I would least want to lose. It is small, it weighs almost nothing, and it renders skin gently without losing detail. On the Z8 it has become genuinely easy to focus, which it was not on film. It has its own full write-up if you want the detail. The Zeiss APO Sonnar 135mm f/2 is the other extreme and my favourite lens to look at files from. It is large and heavy enough that a session with it is physical work. But at 135mm the compression flattens a face in a way that is very flattering, the background dissolves completely, and the correction is such that fine detail comes through with no colour fringing on bright edges. Hair against a bright window renders cleanly, which is where a lot of lenses fall apart. This is also the lens where the stabilisation setup matters most. At 135mm, handheld, a small amount of shake is enough to lose an eye. Entering the lens in the non-CPU data so stabilisation runs makes a visible difference to how many frames survive. Working distance is the thing to plan for. At 135mm you are a long way back — good for candid moments, awkward in a small room, and it means talking to your subject at a volume that changes the mood. I use it for quiet, still portraits, not conversational ones.

What Six Manual Lenses Teaches You

A few things I would tell someone starting this. Weight decides more than you expect. Not which lens is best, but which one is still comfortable in hour three. The Zeiss 85mm and the Nikkor 105mm get the most frames from me — the 85 because the rendering is worth the weight, the 105 because it costs me nothing to carry. The 135mm produces my favourite files and gets used least, and that is entirely about what it weighs. One lens per session, mostly. Swapping manual lenses means re-entering the non-CPU slot, re-adapting to a different focus throw, and losing the rhythm. I usually start on the Zeiss 85 and stay there unless the room or the moment forces a change — often to the 105 when I need to step back. Set exposure before you focus. With no communication between lens and body, the camera is metering off actual light coming through the lens. Get exposure settled first, then spend your attention on focus. • Peaking colour: red or blue, medium sensitivity, never yellow on skin • Habit: peak to get close, magnify to confirm, then shoot • Non-CPU slots: enter every lens once, assign the menu to a custom button • Aperture: manual lenses are usually best a stop down from wide open — sharper, still soft behind • Expect: fewer frames, more keepers, and a slower session that clients often prefer None of this is about manual being better. Modern autofocus glass is better by every measurement, and I use it when the job calls for it. It is about the look these lenses give, and what happens when focusing becomes a decision you make with your hand instead of something that happens before you are ready.
